WINCHESTER MODEL 73 FIRST MODEL DELUXE LEVER ACTION RIFLE ENGRAVED. SN 13255. Cal. 44-40, 24-1/4″ oct bbl, full magazine, half nickel front sight, checkered side V-notch sporting rear. Top flat of bbl is marked “WINCHESTER’S REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT. / KING’S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860.” First Model receiver, mortised dust cover with checkered thumb print. Receiver is engraved in bold foliate scroll with punch dot background. Bottom of carrier is diamond checkered with single punch dot in center of each diamond. Also equipped with a single set trigger. Mounted with highly figured flame-grain walnut, checkered straight grip, crescent steel buttplate with trap door, highly figured forend with H-style checkering. Nose cap has a chip-dot border with foliate scroll around each screw. Inspection of lower tang has assembly number “1073”. Number in tang channel of stock was not legible and inside toe of buttplate “387”. CONDITION: Good. Bbl and mag tube retain a splotchy brown and silver mix patina with normal nicks & scratches. Receiver has a pewter patina toning with brown. Hammer shows a very dark patina. Lever has brown patina blending with silver. Stock is sound with extremely worn checkering, numerous grain checks on both sides, chip at toe missing, and normal nicks & dings in a hand worn oil finish. Forend is sound with severely worn checkering, some chipping on top left side and all the way around nose cap retaining a dark hand worn oil finish. Mechanics are good including set trigger with adjustment screw, dark bore with distinct rifling and considerable shallow pitting. 4-40726 BDT238 (6,000-10,000)
