BEAUTIFUL SPECIAL ORDER DELUXE MODEL 1873 WINCHESTER. SN 148075. Cal. 32WCF, 24-1/4″ oct bbl, full magazine, fine bead front sight, serrated side V-notch sporting rear. Top of bbl is marked “WINCHESTER’S-REPEATING-ARMS-NEW HAVEN CT. /KING’S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860.” Adjacent receiver “32 CAL.” Standard Third Model receiver mounted with “X” walnut, multi-point checkered pistol grip with S-shaped cap, crescent steel buttplate with trap door and H-style checkered forend with nose cap. Factory records indicate gun being shipped without stock, so its professional, custom stock should be considered its original stock. Consignor tells us that the in-letting is identical to Winchester and that lower tang is marked with assembly number “5389X”. Accompanying gun is a Winchester Gun Museum letter dated January 25, 1967 to Mr. A.J. McCroskie. It identifies the gun as “32 caliber, octagon bbl, plain trigger, case hardened, pistol grip, no stock. It was shipped March 5, 1886”. Signed “T.E. Hall, Curator”. Also there is a Cody Firearms Museum fact sheet confirming this information. PROVENANCE: Ex-A.J. McCroskie Collection Ex-Tom Lewis Collection CONDITION: Extremely Fine. Bbl and mag tube retain 96-97% orig blue with a couple minor nicks & scratches, slight brightening on sharp edges and some minor thinning on bottom of tube. Receiver retains 95-97% strong orig case coloring with some thinning on front edge and blending with silver patina on sharp edges. Hammer retains most of its fine orig case colors. Lever has dark strong orig colors on side, thinning and blending with dark patina on bottom. The fine custom stock has sharp checkering, a few minor handling marks and retains nearly all of its high-gloss finish. Buttplate has good visible, orig fading case colors. Forend is sound with good checkering, some minor handling marks, and retains orig piano varnish finish blending with hand-worn patina across bottom. Nose cap retains good orig case colors. Mechanics are crisp, shiny bore with a couple minor shallow pits near muzzle. 4-40661 BDT248 (13,500-18,500)
