CARL SPRINCHORN (American, 1887-1971) TWO PENCIL SKETCHES. 1) Female torso. Signed lower right “CS”. Housed in a painted wood frame with highlighted matte. 2) Nude female wearing a turban. Signed lower left. Housed in a partial gilt frame with highlighted matte. In 1914 Sprinchorn felt the desire for some additional study and enrolled at the Académie Colarossi in Paris where he worked regularly from the life model. These two drawings have the original mats from his first solo exhibition with George Hellman in New York in 1916. It was at Hellman’s where he first met Marsden Hartley who admired these works when he visited the gallery with Alfred Stieglitz, Hartley’s agent. Hartley asked for Sprinchorn’s card and said he would like to visit him. Serendipitously, they both turned up in Provincetown the following summer where their 28-year friendship began. SIZE: Sight: 1) 10-1/4″ x 8″. 2) 10-1/2″ x 8″. PROVENANCE: Estate of the artist. CONDITION: 1) Foxing spots, otherwise good. 2) Some light toning, very good. 9-21986 (1,000-1,500)
