RARE FEDERAL INLAID MAHOGANY AARON WILLARD SHELF CLOCK. First quarter 19th century, Boston, MA. The rectangular bonnet with three brass finials centering a broken arch swan’s neck pediment (not original), the hinged door with shaped glass panel conforming to the enameled dial. The box base with figured mahogany panel within contrasting string inlays on a molded plinth raised on ogee bracket feet. The dial, with Roman numeral chapter ring and time only aperture above the inscription “Aaron Willard / BOSTON” within a gilt decorated scrolling cartouche. The 8 day brass movement with single original weight. SIZE: 34″ h, 13-3/4″ overall w x 6-1/4″ d. CONDITION: The case with replaced cresting. Front panel on box base with old shrinkage crack with professional restoration to ogee bracket feet. The feet appear original. Old surfaces professionally removed. Glass in door a later replacement. The movement original and unmarked. Lead weight original. Pendulum original. Hands original. The dial with overall craquelure. It is possible the parts of the name have been overpainted or heightened at some time. Areas of the dial, especially between the numerals 4 and 6 with overpainting.
