FOUR WHALE BONE AND BALEEN SCRIMSHAWED CORSET BUSKS. Mid 19th century. American. Largest, example of scrimshawed baleen corset busk, decorated with whaling ship, floral sprays and borders, pair of entwined hearts with arrows. Accompanied by a hand written note transcribing the inscription found on the busk “So then this you see remember me and keep me in your mind let all the world say what they will speak of me as you find may you be blessed with all that heaven can give. Long life, peace, comfort and a loving friend. Through all your life most happy may you be and though far distant I will think of thee. C.L.B. 1846”. Whalebone scrimshaw example with whaling ship at anchor flanked by five pointed start and anchor, together with two unmarked ivory busks. SIZE: Piece one: 13-1/2″ l. Piece two: 12-1/2″ l.
