Additional Information: This is a “Portsmouth” model made as a copy of a Bellamy Eagle, made by Artistic Carving Co and was illustrated in their catalog on page 2. Mid 20th Century. CARVED EAGLE PLAQUE BY JOHN HALEY BELLAMY. John Haley Bellamy (1836-1914), Kittery, Maine. Carving of a displayed eagle with great seal of the United States. The proper right wing affixed with pole from which a banner reading, “DON’T GIVE UP THE SHIP”. Banner and shield each painted in red, white and blue enamel paint. The body of the eagle retains traces of gilding and green paint. For similar examples, see pages 66-67 in “John Haley Bellamy Carver of Eagles” book, by Yvonne Brault Smith. SIZE: 28″ l x 9-3/4″ h x 4-1/2″ d. PROVENANCE: From a fine Westerly, Rhode Island estate. CONDITION: Although structurally very good, the carving shows evidence of an attempt to remove gilded and painted surfaces, resulting in the remnants of heavy residue within all of the grooves of the carving and subsequent losses of much the gilded and painted surfaces. 9-28342 (2,000-4,000)
