TEAK AND IVORY OVAL SAILOR MADE WORK BOX. Mid 19th century, American. Delicate oval three finger box with conforming two finger lid carved overall with scrolling vinery, ink heightened. Three fingers on base terminating in rondels, two of which are decorated with six-pointed stars. Box interior lined with brown cotton plaid fabric. Whole fastened with small copper pins. Underside with two notations. First penned in script “Merry X’mas,/To Blanche from Mother/1910”. Second later inscription made with ball point pen “Merry Xmas-/to Dr. Richards from Gladys/1966”. SIZE: 3-1/2″ h x 8-3/4″ l x 6-1/2″ w. PROVENANCE: From a fine Islesboro, Maine home. CONDITION: Structurally very good with all original surfaces and fine mellow patina. 9-23864 (4,000-6,000)
