ALMY FAMILY SCRIMSHAW BOX. Mid 19th century. American. This fine sailor box made from pan bone of whale engraved on the lid with patriotic displayed eagle next to patriotic seal with alternating wax red and white stripes, banner scrimmed with the phrase “E PLURIBUS UNUM” beneath arch of 13 stars within a border of diamonds, five pointed star at each corner. Front of box scrimmed with a wide floral branch. Paper label on the interior printed with “UNCLE EDWARD/ALMY GAVE IT/TO MABLE’S MOTHER/MADE ON WHALING/SHIP – CONSIDERED/UNUSUAL”. SIZE: 3-3/4″ h x 10-1/4″ l x 7″ w. PROVENANCE: From a fine New Jersey home. CONDITION: Very good overall. Slight warping, nice patina. 9-24627 (2,000-3,000)
