WINCHESTER THIRD MODEL 1866 SRC. SN 157726. Cal. 44RF, 20″ rnd bbl, full magazine, square base with slightly modified pinned blade, 2-leaf carbine rear sight. Top of bbl is marked “WINCHESTER’S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW-HAVEN. CT. / KING’S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1886. OCTOBER 16. 1860”. Standard receiver with staple and ring on left side. Mounted with lightly figured walnut, uncheckered straight grip, brass carbine buttplate with trap door housing 4-pc steel with brass tip wiping rod and standard forend with single band. Inspection of lower tang finds assembly number “4756C”. Number in tang channel is not clearly legible. Inside toe of buttplate “1446”. PROVENANCE: Bruce M. Cady Estate Collection CONDITION: Good to Very Good. Bbl and mag tube retain a silver and brown patina mix with fading blue in protected areas. Receiver was polished years ago with slightly rounded edges and retains a mellow patina. Loading gate shows much of its orig nitre blue, silvering in trough. Hammer and lever retain a dark patina. Stock is sound with crack through a knot at lower tang on right side, numerous minor nicks & dings and retains a hand-worn open-grain oil finish. Forend is sound with normal nicks & dings and retains a hand-worn open-grain oil finish. Mechanics are crisp, decent bore with distinct rifling and moderate shallow pitting. 4-36914 BDT233 (4,000-8,000)
