FLAT SIDE FIRST MODEL WINCHESTER 1866 RIFLE. SN 14962. Cal. 44RF, 24-1/4″ oct bbl, full magazine retained with bbl band attached with 2 screws, dovetailed fine bead front sight with bead missing, 2-leaf flip-up rear sight with silver alignment mark. Top of bbl is marked “HENRY’S PATENT OCT. 16, 1860 / MANUFACT’D BY THE NEW HAVEN ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CT.” The Henry-style flat side receiver with King’s Improvement flat loading gate on right side with staple and ring on left mounted with lightly figured walnut, uncheckered straight grip. Missing brass buttplate. 9-5/8″ chamfered forend retained by single screw. Inspection of lower tang reveals large stamped serial number “14962” and much smaller numbers forward of that stamped “1556”. Top tang channel of stock is stamped “14962”. PROVENANCE: David Crocker Estate Collection CONDITION: Fair to Good. Bbl and mag tube retain a brown and silver patina mix with numerous fine scratches and normal minor nicks & dings. Flat side receiver cleaned and polished years ago, with slightly rounded edges, a V-shaped notch at forward left side, bronze colored spot over chamber ring, many minor nicks & dings and retains a mustard patina. Top tang shows repaired break at forward screw and screw is missing. Stock is sound, fitting tangs reasonably well, some minor handling marks and a fine, hand-rubbed restored oil finish. Forend is sound with repaired crack at escutcheon on right side, some minor nicks & dings and retains a fine, hand-rubbed restored oil finish. Mechanics are good, dark bore with distinct rifling and considerable pitting. 4-36849 BDT241 (3,000-5,000)
