ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: We do not believe this to be a genuine Winchester 1866 and do not guarantee it. SCARCE WINCHESTER FIRST MODEL FLAT SIDE 1866 RIFLE. SN 14512. Cal. 44RF, 24-1/4″ oct bbl, full mag with front band attached with 2 screws, half-nickel front sight, 2-leaf flip-up carbine rear sight. Top of bbl is marked “HENRY’S-PATENT-OCT. 16. 1860 / KING’S-PATENT-MARCH 29. 1866”. Henry-style receiver with flat front edge, King’s Improvement flat loading gate on right side, staple and ring on left. Receiver has been custom engraved with oak leaves and acorns on forward portion of each side. Left plate has flower blossoms and fine open scroll with flowing ribbon inscribed “J.W.J.” Right plate has similar flowers and scroll with smaller banner “LIBERTY MISSOURI”. Top flat has a flower blossom design. Mounted with dark walnut, uncheckered straight grip, crescent brass buttplate with trap door, 9-7/16″ forend with chamfered end retained by single screw. Inspection of lower tang finds large stamped “14512” on lower left tang and forward of that, in smaller numbers, “1585”. Top tang channel of stock is stamped “14512” with inside toe of buttplate stamped “14232”. PROVENANCE: David Crocker Estate Collection CONDITION: Very Good. Bbl retains a silver-gray patina with areas towards muzzle showing some blue blending with silver patina. Mag tube retains a silver mixed with brown patina, showing blue in protected areas. There are normal minor nicks & scratches. Receiver was cleaned and polished years ago, has slightly rounded edges and retains a mustard patina. Stock is sound with some minor nicks & dings, a couple minor small dents in toe line and retains a dark, hand-worn restored oil finish. Hammer shows a mottled silver and dark brown patina. Lever shows similar dark brown patina mixing with silver. Stock is slightly shy along edge of buttplate. Forend is sound with minor nicks & dings and retains a dark hand-worn restored oil finish. Mechanics are crisp with bright shiny bore with a couple of minor shallow pits. 4-36848 BDT244 (10,000-15,000)
