EXTRAORDINARY HIGH CONDITION MODEL 1866 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. SN 17199. Cal. 44 RF Henry. Standard grade rifle with 24-1/4″ oct bbl, full magazine with threaded magazine plug, standard front sight and Henry style 900 yard ladder rear sight. Bbl has sharp Henry & King’s patent markings. Mounted with very nicely figured, uncheckered, straight grain American walnut with straight stock and crescent brass buttplate with trap. Forend cap has dimpled front edge with integral sling loop and a corresponding sling loop in the buttstock. SN was observed on left side of lower tang along with a small “W” and the initials “VR”. SN was also found in top tang channel of buttstock and inside toe of buttplate. These early ’66 rifles were the immediate successor to the eminently successful Henry rifle that saw service throughout the Civil War. By the time the ’66 hit the market the buying public was accustomed to and demanded repeating rifles. The vast majority of all these early rifles were immediately pressed into service during the great Westward expansion across the American frontier. They usually saw hard & extended service under extremely adverse conditions in saddle scabbards and wagon boxes, usually with little or no maintenance leaving most of them in hard worn condition with little orig finish. CONDITION: Extremely fine plus, all matching. Bbl & magazine tube retain 96-97% strong orig factory blue with light sharp edge wear and some thinning around the muzzle end. Magazine band shows moderate wear with a couple of tiny spots of pitting. Bbl has some very minor surface oxidation in a couple of tiny spots and one small thin spot toward the front end on the top flat. There are a couple of small nicks on top & top side flat just above the forearm. Receiver retains sharp edges with only a very minor amount of wear and overall retains a medium mustard patina, probably having been polished many years ago. Loading gate retains about 90% glossy orig fire blue. Trigger retains about 75% dark orig blue. Lever retains case colors on left side mixed with light patina. Right side retains traces of case colors. Hammer retains strong case colors on sides and bright colors on rear edge. Wood is sound with light handling & use nicks & scratches in the varnish and a couple of small gouges near the buttplate tang and another on the bottom above the sling swivel base. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore, may be unfired, retains most of the orig blue on bolt face. This is one of the finest Henry marked ’66 rifles to come to market in many years. 4-40803 JR334 (40,000-60,000)
