UNUSUAL PAIR OF SCRIMSHAW TEETH. Late 19th- early 20th century, South Pacific Islands. Each tooth the portrait of an islander: the first of a male figure with headdress and body paint titled “Marquesas”. The reverse scrimmed with coconut palm trees on a rocky landscape. The second depicting a female islander with headband, earrings, and necklace titled “Mookahwa”. The reverse with a design of palm trees and a landscape. SIZE: Each is 7″ l. PROVENANCE: From a private Utah collection. CONDITION: Both teeth with normal and expected shrinkage cracks, well polished. Very good overall. 9-90375 (1,200-1,800)
