ATTRIBUTED TO WILLIAM GAY YORKE (American, 1817-1892) PORTRAIT OF THE SHIP “GOLDEN RULE”. Outstanding oil on canvas ship portrait shows the black hulled three-masted American ship sailing right to left. The American flag flies off the back and the ship’s pennant off center mast. Other signal flags are seen. The name emblazoned on the bow and stern and 15 men are seen on the deck. All sails are up with a bottom center sail billowing. Off the stern is a two-masted sailing ship, a distant sail and steamboat with a flock of birds. Off the bow is a transitional steam sail ship, a pilot boat with “3” on sail and an island with a lighthouse and building. Mountains can be seen off in the distance. Three white and black birds are flying in the foreground over well defined green, choppy ocean. The sun shines through clouds on the left hand margin and the sky is blue with other white-edged gray clouds. Geo. Rowney & Co. London canvas stamp on reverse. Housed in its fine original gold frame. An outstanding fresh to the market, never before offered ship portrait. SIZE: 24″ X 36″.
