RARE & IMPORTANT SET OF CAPTAIN’S SEALS FOR WHALING LOG. Mid 19th century. American. Three ivory seals each identifying specific type of whale (“Sperm”, “Blue”, “Finn”) housed in custom made whale bone box of the period with cover. Scrimshaw box identifying owner as “CAPT DANA FLYNN”, opposing side identifying ship as “ESSEX”, home port as “NEW BEDFORD MASS”. Each seal is also identified with name of ship and port engraved on the top, side of each seal marked with owner’s initials “D.F.” and each seal engraved with whale it portrays. SIZE: 3″ h x 4″ l. PROVENANCE: From a fine New Jersey home. CONDITION: Very good overall, seals with excellent color and patina. 9-24639 (2,000-3,000)
