CAST IRON HUBLEY “AMERICA” AIRPLANE. The largest cast iron plane ever made by any of the toy companies during the 1920s-1930s, it dwarfs most other toy planes produced during this time period. The aluminum wingspan is an amazing 17″! Pilot & co-pilot are seated in the open air cockpit directly in front of the wing, and when the plane is pulled along the floor its three props revolve in unison getting ready for the impending flight. This particular example was most likely produced in the late 1930s due to the fact it has wooden hubs & rubber tires and cast aluminum engine cowls & propellers. Most assuredly this was a cost cutting measure as it would have been cheaper to produce these individual parts in this fashion. Manufactured by the famed Hubley Toy Company of Lancaster, PA this toy is a “must have” for any serious collector of toy airplanes! SIZE: 14″ l. CONDITION: Overall very fine plus with no repairs or repaint, rubber tires are older replacements. 1-8584 JL (4,000-5,000)
