UNSIGNED (American, Mid 19th Century) PORTRAIT OF COMFORT VINING. Oil on canvas folk art portrait shows a young woman seated in a grain painted side chair wearing a black dress with white lace collar. She holds in her tiny hand, a red rose with green leaves. A gold colored wrap is seen on her other arm extending around to the other side. A green swag curtain with green pull is seen on upper left and she wears a necklace and brooch. She is looking at the viewer with her brown hair pulled behind her head. All against a brown background. Housed in its original mahogany veneered antique frame. A pencil inscription on side of stretcher “Aunt Comfort Vining Born May 17, 1829 Married man by name of Fall. Went to Ossipee, NH. F.A.H. Vining, Born May 13, 1843. Eliza Ann Sampson? Born November 25, 1843″. Also a card found with the painting indicates that Comfort was born in 1829 and the painting was made in 1845 by itinerant painter who came to their farm on Mt Blue” (Maine). “Exhibitor Ruth Hight Hurd”. SIZE: 13″ x 10-1/2″. CONDITION: There are some light scrapes and paint chips, untouched condition. Generally very good. 9-99704 (5,000-10,000)
