IMPORTANT WHALING LOG OF THE SHIP “CORAL” BY ELI GIFFORD. The small log starting entry September 4, 1854, final entry being in 1858. The “Coral” was a whaling ship out of New Bedford, Massachusetts. The log book has extensive entries involving whaling & locations. Starting on page 126 there are a series of pencil drawings with one highlighted in red watercolor, another in blue pen. They include scenes of ships, men & women, whaling, animals, locations, etc. It should be noted that the vast majority of the entries are in black or blue pen and the drawings are in pencil. Some entries include poems, another “Whaling Song”, example “February 24, 1860 At 9am Saw sperm whales Lowered 4 boats and got 3 small whales that made ___ at 2 took them to the ship at dark…”.
