1XL GEORGE WOSTENHOLM BOWIE KNIFE BELONGING TO CAPTAIN BENJAMIN FRANKLIN HOWLAND. 19th century. This fine English knife with double edge blade, nickel silver guard and well worn horn and ivory handle. Blade with stamp maker’s mark on ricasso “1*XL/GEORGE/WOSTENHOLMS/CELEBRATED/CUTLERY”. Ricasso on the reverse engraved with rider on horseback with hat with plume. This knife was owned by Captain Benjamin Howland (1812-1888) of New Bedford, Massachusetts. SIZE: Overall: 12-1/2″ l. Blade: 7-1/2″ l. PROVENANCE: From a fine New Jersey home. CONDITION: Blade with small areas of rust near tip, retained forge and sharpening marks, handle intact with nice color and patinated surfaces, sheath absent. Otherwise very good. 9-24659 (800-1,200)
