ENGRAVED HENRY 1860 LEVER ACTION REPEATING RIFLE. SN 2825. Cal. 44RF, 24-1/4″ oct bbl with integral magazine, no front sight blade, open dovetail for rear sight. Bbl is marked “HENRY’S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860 / MANUFACT’D BY THE NEW HAVEN ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CT.” “2825” adjacent to receiver. Left side trough has 2 screws with sling loop removed. Early receiver with top dovetail with 900 yd ladder sight without retaining screw. Receiver is engraved in the Samuel Hoggson style with left side with bold foliate scroll with punch dot background and deer leaping a two rail, split-rail fence. Forward portion of left side has typical Hoggson flower blossom with punch dot background. Both vignettes are framed in wavy-line border. Right side has foliate scroll with punch dot background with flower blossom on forward section. Top rear section and top tang have foliate scroll with punch dot backgrounds. This gun is engraved nearly identical to the gun shown on page 155 of the Les Quick book The Henry Rifle. This gun is serial number “8300” and is also inscribed “J.B. STUART”. The lower tang has had the lever latch removed and hole filled. Mounted with streaky walnut, replacement custom stock, brass round heel buttplate with trap door with top tang engraved with matching foliate scroll with punch dot background. Tang screws and buttplate screws all appear to be replacements. PROVENANCE: David Crocker Estate collection CONDITION: Fine+. Bbl and mag tube retain a dark patina with some areas thinning and blending with silver patina with normal nicks, dings & fine scratches. Receiver, which was orig silver-plated, shows fairly sharp engraving with some typical nicks & dings and relatively sharp edges. Bolt has both extractor tips missing. Hammer and lever both retain a dark brown patina blended with some silver. The replacement custom stock has a few minor nicks & scratches and retains an open-grain, hand-rubbed oil finish. Mechanics are good, dark bore with distinct rifling with shallow pitting throughout. 4-36886 BDT237 (15,000-25,000)
