THE HOWLAND FAMILY WHALING ARCHIVE. The Howland Family were primarily involved in the New Bedford, Massachusetts whaling business. At the turn of the century, they were instrumental in the development of the Waikiki Beach, Hawaii. The lot includes: 1) A loose leaf binder with a number of whaling related documents and letters including letters between the Howland’s during the last quarter of the 19th Century; photographs of family members; whaling receipts for supplies; a letter dated August 1st, 1899 and another letter dated 1916 which talk about family owned property and the idea of investing in more property in Honolulu. 2) A bound book with additional letters of Mary Ann Howland titled “Mother’s Album” kept by her daughter Anna R. Howland with hand written entries including poems and additional clippings. 3) A small printed notebook titled “Outfits for a Whaling Voyage” which lists 44 pages of supplies needed for a whaling voyage. The pencil inscribed first page “Bark Lancer April 22 1869 Wm. J. Macy Bound for the Indian Ocean Whaling”. 4) A sail cloth bound book on nautical astronomy titled “The Young Navigator’s Guide”. 5) A Canadian Certificate of Service as master to James McDonald. 6) 1/4 plate daguerreotype of one of the Howland family men sitting and holding an ivory topped cane. 6) A print of the George & Susan of New Bedford owned by George Howland. PROVENANCE: From a fine New Jersey home. CONDITION: Generally good, seal on the daguerreotype has been broken, most everything is intact. 9-24565 (1,000-2,000)
