TWO SAILOR MADE WALKING STICKS. Second half 19th century. Probably American. First is whale ivory and baleen stick with carved baleen handle. Second is of stacked shark vertebrae of graduated size, head of cane with three baleen bands and baleen grip. SIZE: 34-1/2″ l both pieces. PROVENANCE: From a fine New Jersey home. CONDITION: Ivory example with loss to one ivory band and with small stress cracks throughout. Vertebrae example with small losses to bands near tip of cane. Otherwise both very good with undisturbed patina. 9-24646 (800-1,200)
