INCREDIBLE VERY EARLY HENRY 1860 LEVER ACTION REPEATING RIFLE. SN 516. Cal. 44RF, 24-1/4″ oct bbl with integral mag, half-moon German silver front sight, no provision on bbl for rear sight. Top flat of bbl in small letters “HENRY’S PATENT. OCT. 16, 1860 / MANUFACT’D BY THE NEW HAVEN ARMS. CO. NEW HAVEN. CT.” And adjacent receiver “516”. Standard receiver, dovetail on top flat with 1000 yd ladder sight without retaining screw. Mounted with straight grain walnut, uncheckered straight grip, brass buttplate with rounded heel and trap door housing a 4-pc hickory cleaning rod. Stock is proper early style with abrupt comb, slight perched belly and large hole for cleaning rod. Underside of tang of buttplate is stamped “516” forward of screw hole. Both of the hand-fit screws are marked “516”. The hand-fit bottom tang screw is marked “16”. Hand-fit rear top tang screw stamped “516” and hand-fit front “16”. Left side of bottom tang is marked “516”. The assembly number on loading gate and rnd portion of bbl are matching “157”. Cartridge follower is a proper smaller variation with simple rectangular cut in receiver to accept. PROVENANCE: David Crocker Estate Collection CONDITION: Extremely Fine. Bbl retains 96-98% dark orig blue, slightly silvering on sharp edges, some minor thinning on mag tube near receiver and some very fine surface oxidation. Sharp crisp receiver has a beautiful butterscotch patina on frame with side plates having the quite common darker discoloration patina. Hammer retains a silver hardening blended with brown patina. Lever is a dark brown patina with some silver mixed in. Stock is sound with a few minor handling marks and tiny nicks & scratches retaining nearly all of its fine orig varnish finish. Mechanics are crisp with a spectacular shiny bore. Gun appears to have seen very little use in its 150 year existence. Such a fine example of this early repeating rifle is very seldom offered for public sale. 4-36880 BDT240 (75,000-125,000)
