26″, (66 CM), EXTREMELY RARE FIGURE “E” JULES STEINER BÉBÉ. Rare and elusive Steiner circa 1889, with the head incised “J. STEINER Bte. S.G.D.G. PARIS Fire E.18” on original fully-jointed Steiner body, with so-called “banana hands”, with bulbous blue gray paperweight eyes, finely painted eyelashes, and evenly arched eyebrows, closed full mouth, with realistically modeled ears. She is elaborately dressed in a red blue and green pleated dress with matching cape with multi-colored fringe trim, a wonderful antique blonde mohair wig with long extensions, antique black leather French shoes impressed on the soles “10 DEPOSE” and also with the full figure of a woman. Completing the outfit is a white straw hat with big ribbon with colorful flower design, papier maché berries and pink feathers with a label inside reading “Kate Quiller Doll Hat”. In addition, she has a pair of antique red felt gloves and a velvet covered pocketbook with two metal stripes. Very few examples of this particular mold are known to exist, and, although French, it bears an uncanny resemblance to the Simon & Halbig 719 mold. CONDITION: Overall, very good. Mostly original finish to body with slight wear and possible old repaint to forearms and hands. There has been a minor mold flaw to top of right ear which has since been professionally altered to enhance this doll’s beauty. Picture of mold flaw prior to repair is available upon request. 8-76146 RS (20,000-30,000)
