EARLY HEYM PERCUSSION CAPE GUN. Cal. about 18 bore shotgun by about 65 cal. rifle. Fine early piece with 30″ bbls with flat rib, dovetailed front sight, and wide, fixed rear sight. It has back action locks with stalking safety’s. Both lockplate and hammer are lightly engraved. Top rib is inlaid in silver “I.N. HEYM A SUHL”. There are three dots at each end of the inscription and there is a wide and narrow silver band at the breech end. Mounted in a 1-pc, very highly figured English or Italian walnut stock with carved demon head at the forestock tip with mother of pearl and ebony eyes. 1-pc of ebony is missing. Forestock & wrist are nicely checkered, with carved leaves & intricate patterns on the wrist. Both sides of the buttstock are raise carved in floral & foliate patterns. It has a very beautiful carved & checkered horn triggerguard with foliate carved front tang. Bbls have two German silver guides containing what is probably the orig ramrod with horn tip, missing the small tip. Buttstock has a raised cheek piece with brass buttplate and sling stud with a corresponding loop on the rear ramrod guide. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Iron retains a dark brown patina with light surface rust. Bbls were probably originally browned. Stock has a very old pegged grain check repair in the comb. Mechanics are fine. Rifle bore is strong & bright with crisp rifling. Shotgun bore has fine pitting. Wm. Hancock Collection 4-58563 JR235 (2,000-3,000)
