*RARE & HISTORIC R.G. OWEN CUSTOM SPRINGFIELD RIFLE BUILT FOR & USED BY KERMIT ROOSEVELT. Cal. 30-06. SN 2 or 47528. Beautiful custom rifle with 24” tapered rnd bbl, ramp front sight with 4-leaf, matted, express rear sight, one standing, three folding, appear to be graduated to 400 yards, mounted on a custom, matted, quarter rib. Top of bbl is engraved “R.G. OWEN, SAUQUOIT, N.Y.”. Receiver ring & rear bridge are matted to match. Receiver ring & left side of bridge have an early scope mount, missing scope. Bolt knob is nicely knurled with a flower blossom engraving. Mounted in a very nicely figured, 1-pc tiger-striped, walnut stock with horn forend tip and custom grip cap with a trap, straight comb with shadow cheekpiece, 13-1/2” over a fine checkered, Niedner buttplate with trap. Forestock & wrist are beautifully checkered with about 22 lines per inch. Sides of forestock have a folding hook for resting against a tree to shoot. Bottom of stock & bottom of bbl have narrow sling swivels containing an old military style, leather sling. Left side of receiver, on cutoff housing and on bolt handle are stamped with a “2”, while the 5-digit number “47528” is stamped on front of grip. Floorplate is engraved “KERMIT ROOSEVELT’S / CUSTOM SPRINGFIELD SPORTING RIFLE SERIAL NO. 2 / WITH WHICH HE HUNTED MARCO POLO SHEEP, IBIS (sic) / THE GIANT PANDA, WHITETAIL DEER, AND OTHER SPECIES / C. 1915 TO 1939 / ‘EAST OF THE SUN AND WEST OF THE MOON’”. Trigger guard has gold inlaid intertwined initials “KR”. Accompanied by the orig, full length, leather, safari case for this rifle with one U.S. Customs sticker on side and a partial, very old airline sticker on the other. Also accompanied by a book entitled Outdoor Pastimes of an American Hunter, Roosevelt. Additionally accompanied by another book, Theodore Roosevelt Outdoorsman, Wilson, autographed by the author & Tweed Roosevelt. Page 148 mentions this very rifle, by serial number, and it has a full & complete description of this rifle on p. 290. One additional accompaniment is a color lithograph picture of Theodore Roosevelt carrying his Springfield made, custom rifle, in a winter mountain scene, approaching a bear at bay, surrounded by hounds with two other hunters & horses in background. One further accompaniment is a 3-page letter from R.L. Wilson describing this rifle. He credits Kermit Roosevelt with designing the hooks on sides of forestock. This is one of, if not the, most important Kermit Roosevelt items held in private hands today. He was a consummate hunter & conservationist along side his famous father. Their relationship was such that they often shared their guns. Kermit served in the Army during WWI and WWII and died serving in Alaska in WWII. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl & receiver retain a thin, plum blue patina showing moderate to. Floorplate is a thin blue/gray patina and trigger guard retains 75-80% orig blue with some rust around gold initials. Grip cap retains 75-80% strong orig case colors. Stock has a couple of hairlines back of top tang, otherwise wood is sound with light handling & use marks and retains most of its orig hand rubbed oil finish showing moderate wear to checkering. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore. Books are fine with the print crisp & clear. The case shows a long lifetime of hard wear with a flexed section in middle, lots of wear & rubs with broken strap & hinges, missing sling and rear metal sling loop 4-59033 (40,000-50,000)
