CASED R.B. RODDA DOUBLE RIFLE. Cal. 16 Bore. SN 838. Beautiful dbl rifle with 28” bbls, smooth, flat rib with tiny front sight and engraved 4-leaf rear sight graduated 50-200 yards. Front half of rib is hand matted & rear half is marked in gold Old English script “R.B. RODDA & CO. GUN MAKERS BY APPOINTMENT LONDON & CALCUTTA”. It has extractors with dbl underbites. Receiver is a rnd action with Purdey’s Patent bolt & thumb lever in front of trigger guard and marked on water table “PURDEY’S PATENT BOLT”. It has back action peninsula locks with stalking safeties. Mounted with very nicely figured, streaky, French walnut with full checkered, splinter forearm secured with a sgl wedge and pistol grip stock with small cheekpiece, 14-1/2” over a steel shotgun buttplate. Receiver, lockplates & all appended metal parts are beautifully deep relief engraved with foliate & vine patterns and a fine stippled background. It has maker’s name in a ribbon on each lockplate. It appears that all metal, at one time, was gold washed as there are traces of gold in very sheltered areas. Buttplate is also beautifully engraved in Moorish patterns with a fine background. Bbls have a safari sling eye with a corresponding eye in buttstock. Grip cap is oval steel with scalloped edge, engraved to match. Accompanied by an orig, red velvet lined, oak & leather Rodda casing with inside of lid embossed in gold with all the maker’s information. Bottom is compartmented for the two pieces of the rifle and a complete set of ivory handled tools by Hawksley. The tools also include an orig Davis nutcracker style mold. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Bbls retain 85-90% thin orig blue. Receiver, with traces of orig gold wash, retains a smooth, even blue/brown patina. Stock has a small chip back of top tang with a sliver missing from left side of forearm at bbl channel; otherwise wood is sound with minor handling & use marks and a long rub by buttplate. It retains most of its orig factory finish with some dark oil staining around receiver & lockplates. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bores. Case exterior is soiled and water stained, missing some leather from top front of lid, but is completely sound & serviceable. Interior shows moderate to heavy wear with soil & some loose partitions. Tools & implements are all fine; retain most of their orig gold wash with a cracked handle on one or two pieces and case trimmer with its ivory handle cut off.
