ANNA ELIZABETH KLUMPKE (American, 1856-1942) THE RED KERCHIEF. Outstanding large oil on canvas portrait of a French girl wearing a red kerchief on her black hair. She wears a white shirt with red dress and black apron. One hand holds small spray of flowers at side, the other rests on stool. She is looking off to the side. Signed lower left “A E Klumpke 1886”. It was during the time period from 1882 to 1891 that Anna was exhibiting at the Paris Salon and also was a medal winner in Versailles in 1886. After 1898 she lived with Rosa Bonheur until Bonhuer’s death and she inherited the Estate and founded the Rosa Bonhuer Memorial Art School and Museum in Fontainebleau, France. An outstanding work from this artist’s best period. Housed in a magnificent gesso decorated gilt frame. Back of canvas is a large canvas stamp of “Rey & Perrot, Paris”. SIZE: 36” x 28-3/4”.
