UNUSUAL & RARE PURDEY PERCUSSION RIFLE/SHOTGUN 2 BBL SET. Cal. About 14 bore shotgun and 65 caliber rifled bbls. SN 2133. The shotgun bbls are 29-1/2” long with smooth flat rib bearing the maker’s name and a single brass bead. The rifle bbls are 27-3/4” long with a long low front sight and 3-leaf folding gold line express sight and also bears the maker’s name & address. It has delicate front action lockplates with dolphin hammers & stalking safeties with platinum blow-out plugs on both sets of bbls. The lockplates are each lightly engraved with a reclining stag and light arabesque patterns. It has a large iron trigger guard with checkered grip and an engraved tiger on the bow with a short pineapple finial. The top tang is beautifully engraved with full coverage patterns and a cat’s face. It is mounted in a 1-pc nicely figured walnut stock with sling stud & smooth steel buttplate. Each of the bbls has two ramrod guides and are secured in the stock with a single wedge. Accompanied by a letter dated 31 October 2003 stating that a Mr. Desmond Lundy of British Columbia, Canada purchased this set directly from Purdey’s in the early 1960’s. Also accompanies is a letter from Purdey’s to Mr. Lundy stating that this gun was built in 1831. CONDITION: Very fine. Both sets of bbls and the wood retain most of a fine professionally restored finish, probably from Purdey’s. Forestock has a grain check near the wedge. Checkering has been freshened and does not match. Bbls retain most of this beautiful restored silver & brown Damascus pattern. Rifle bores are strong with bright rifling, dark in the grooves. Shotgun bores have been cleaned and have scattered light pitting. 4-51403 (9,000- 12,000)
