RARE WOODEN SHIP CAULKING WEDGE. Small hatchet shaped steel tool, 4-3/4″ high with slightly offset 3″ rounded blade with squared bottom, 1″ shank with a small haft hole and a tapered flat top head. It is marked on one side with what appears to be “PACIFIC———MILLS / U.S.S. CHARLESTON”. This tool was used for caulking the seams with oakum on a wooden ship. CONDITION: Very fine. Smooth dark brown patina with traces of old silver paint. Light pitting with hammer marks on the head. 4-52103 JR459 (250-500)
