OLD ICE AXE. This appears to be a very early ice axe, with 10-1/2″ head, having a pointed blade on one end with saw teeth on the back edge and a chopping blade on the other end that is 2-1/2″ wide. Overall 35″ long with two 5″ languets and a cap on the butt end with a 1-1/2″ square spike. There is a metal band screwed to the haft, near the butt end and it has a canvas wrist loop attached to a metal ring. CONDITION: Iron has an even dark brown patina. Haft has a lovely dark patina and the canvas is fine. From the collection of the late Bruce McDowell. 4-54618 JR432 (150-250)
