AUGUSTO CHARTRAND (DUBOIS) (Cuban 1828-1899) “SUNSET MATTEANZAS HARBOUR, 1875”. Outstanding and rare work from one of the three acclaimed Chartrand brothers. This small work typifies the work of documenting Cuban landscape which is considered the best of his work. This small scene shows a panoramic view of a river harbor with two mast schooner off a cliff side house. In the distance is a city under large mountains, all under a sky filled with soft colors with the foreground having detailed vegetation and rock outcroppings. Signed, titled and dated on the reverse. Housed in a modern gilt molded wood frame. Accompanying this lot is the original gesso decorated frame which has some losses. PROVENANCE: From a fine Downeast Maine home. Prior to this, owned by the owner’s of a Cuban sugar plantation in the 1800’s. Believed to have been purchased from the artist. REFERENCE: This work is sited in the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Inventory of American Painting and Sculpture database (Control Number: IAP 17960008). SIZE: 8” x 12”.
