AUGUSTO CHARTRAND (DUBOIS) (Cuban 1828-1899) MALANGES RIVER LANDSCAPE, 1875. Outstanding and rare work from one of the three acclaimed Chartrand brothers. This work typifies the work of documenting Cuban landscape which is considered the best of his work. The scene shows a river boat with local Cubans pulling and rowing a boat laden with barrels and having two others at rear of boat; one steering and one fishing. The river has high cliff side with lush vegetation on the left and the right side with a shallow sand and rocky bar with palm trees. A colorful exotic egret is seen near the water. The river in the distance curves left and light is shown on the distant bank all under a blue and white cloud sky. Initial monogrammed “AC” and dated “1875” in the lower left corner. The original title, probably was on back of original canvas but can not be seen due to relining. Housed in its original period gesso decorated outstanding frame. PROVENANCE: From a fine Downeast Maine home. Prior to this, owned by the owner’s of a Cuban sugar plantation in the 1800’s. Believed to have been purchased from the artist.
