SCARCE CASED CHARLES LANCASTER SIDELOCK OVER/UNDER SHOTGUN TWO BARREL SET. Cal. 12 ga. SN 13922. Fewer than 35 Lancaster O/U shotguns were made of which only about 12 were sidelocks. Fine 2-bbl set of this unusual shotgun with two sets of Whitworth steel bbls, 28” (#1) choked MOD/IMP-CYL and 32” (#2) choked FULL/MOD. Both have plain tops with small ramp front beads with doll’s head bbl extension, ejectors & dbl triggers. Left side of bbl ribs is marked “HAMMERLESS EJECTOR PATENT” and right side has maker’s name & address. Mounted with very nicely figured, English walnut with unusual shaped wrap around forearm with sculpted horn tip and straight hand stock, 14-3/8” over a serrated butt. Receiver & lockplates are beautifully engraved with fine foliate arabesque patterns in about 70% coverage with maker’s name on each lockplate & “C. LANCASTER / LONDON” in ribbons on each side of receiver. Fences are beautifully sculpted in sweeping ribs with a hump back top tang that has “SAFE” in gold. Bottom of stock has a gold initial oval engraved “D.R.H.” Accompanied by its orig, green felt lined, trunk case with orig brass & ebony cleaning rod, a pair of Hussey horn handled turn screws, the orig brass & ebony cleaning rod handle, a pair of orig Lancaster nickeled snap caps, a nickeled rnd oil bottle and a leather pouch with cleaning pull through. A covered compartment in the end contains five replacement springs for hammers & opening levers along with one replacement firing pin. Also accompanying is an Aug. 1939 letter from Abercrombie & Fitch to a Mr. Dan R. Hanna of Cleveland, Ohio regarding the chambers of this shotgun. Sides of bbl reinforcements are marked “2-1/2 INCH CASES” and in fact are now 2-3/4” chambers. Both sets of bbls are nitro-proofed and re-proofed for 1-1/8 oz. of shot. #1 BBLS: Bore diameter: top – .728, bottom – .739. Bore restrictions: top – .002, bottom – .026. (Appears to have been “jug choked”.) Wall thickness: top – .031, bottom – .026. #2 BBLS: Bore diameter: top – .736, bottom – .735. Bore restrictions: top – .021, bottom – .040. (Also appears to have been “jug choked”.) Wall thickness: top – .031, bottom – .030. Drop at heel: 2-5/8”, drop at comb: 1-1/2”. Weight with 28” bbls: 6 lbs. 14.4 oz. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. #1 bbls retain about 90% thin orig blue. #2 bbls retain about 95% orig blue turning slightly plum. Lockplates retain most of their faded, orig case colors. Receiver has case colors turned silver with traces of colors in sheltered area. Stock has a hairline back of top tang, otherwise wood is sound showing moderate to heavy wear and retains about all of a fine professionally restored finish. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bores. Case exterior is dry & crackled showing moderate to heavy wear, missing handle & one of straps. Lock is functional & lining is fine with light to moderate soil and minor moth damage.
