*SPECTACULAR, UNUSUAL AND RARE PURDEY FUNERAL MODEL DBL BBL SHOTGUN. Cal. 20 ga. SN 23714. Beautiful Ken Hunt engraved self-opening shotgun with 28″ bbls choked MOD(.015)/IMP-CYL(.009) with smooth concave tapered rib, single bead and the company’s name & address near the chamber end. It has a gold “4” at the breech end of the rib with corresponding “4”‘s on the opening lever and tip of the forearm. The bbls have dbl chopper lumps with ejectors and dbl triggers. The receiver and lockplates began life unadorned, completely smooth and barren of any embellishments. Mr. Edward G. Nicholson, the president of Congoleum Corp., purchased this fine Purdey in its original configuration and returned it to Purdey’s for the current embellishment that it has. Mr. Nicholson requested that Ken Hunt engrave the lockplates and ordered that he inlay two raised gold flying partridge on the left side and two raised gold flying woodcock on the right side with rather sparse but very detailed side embellishments. Each lockplate also has “J. Purdey & Sons.” inlaid in gold and the bottom of the receiver has a similar gold inlay plus “.LONDON.”. The trigger bow has an exquisite flying mallard with no surrounding embellishments. The left lockplate is signed “K.C. Hunt” and the right lockplate is signed “K.C.H.”. The top tang has “SAFE” in gold.

After Mr. Hunt had completed the engraving and inlays, the metal & wood were completely restored to original specifications by Purdey’s. It is mounted in extremely beautiful marble cake French walnut with diamond checkered forearm and straight stock with raised teardrop side panels, 14″ over a checkered butt. In addition they provided a best quality original oak & dark maroon leather, green felt lined trunk case with compartments for the shotgun, a pair of turn screws, Purdey’s snap caps, a Purdey marked pewter oil bottle and 2-piece jointed brass & wood wiping rod with tools and a brass shell extractor. It is accompanied by this fine case and the original rose-colored canvas & leather traveling cover with a leather panel on the top bearing Mr. Nicholson’s gold embossed initials, “E.G.N.”. Drop at the heel 1-9/16″, drop at the comb 1-5/16″. Weight 5 lbs. 7.2 oz. with slight cast off. CONDITION: Extremely fine plus. Retains virtually all of its fine original Purdey’s finish to both metal and wood. Rib address is a little soft, but other than that no discernable flaws or faults were observed. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bores. Case is exceptionally fine, retaining virtually all of its beautiful original factory finish.
