EXTRAORDINARY PAIR OF CHARLES DALY DIAMOND QUALITY UNDER LEVER DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUNS. Cal. 4 bore & 8 bore. SN 896 & 1204. These extraordinary guns are the epitome of the gun maker’s art from the 19th C., which still holds true as the likelihood of anyone being able to duplicate them today is so remote as be discounted. Both shotguns are Prussian made by Lindner, obviously on special order, reportedly for a wealthy American waterfowl hunter from the Eastern Shore of Maryland. GUN #1, the 4 bore, is a massive 22 lb. 10.24 oz. with 37” steel bbls, which make up over half of the total weight. They have a tapered, flat, hand matted rib with dbl ivory beads, doll’s head extension & extractor. The rib is engraved in gold “CHARLES DALY DIAMOND QUALITY KRUPP DRAWN STEEL BARRELS”. Mounted in a heavy Circassian walnut stock with wonderful marble cake figure at butt with nearly straight grain through the wrist. It has a checkered forearm with horn semi-schnable tip with Prince of Wales style stock, 14” over a leather faced solid red pad. It has a blank gold initial oval on bottom and a tiny hard rubber grip cap. Receiver & all appended metal are fantastically relief engraved with lockplates having a deep relief gold setter on point and two deep relief gold geese at front end. Right lockplate has a deep relief gold dog at rear edge and two deep relief gold turkeys or Auerhaum at front end. Both vignettes are set in wonderfully detailed forest scenes. Balance of receiver & lockplates have full coverage deep foliate & floral patterns with a very fine stippled background. Fences have beautifully scalloped firing pin recesses. Bottom tang has serial number in gold and water table is marked “PRUSSIA”. Hammer noses have gold inlaid eyes and fangs of a stylized wolf. Engraving patterns extend 1-1/2” up over the chambers. Unable to gauge any of dimensions. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbls retain 96-97% strong orig blue with slight muzzle edge wear, some light scrapes on right bbl with some thinning over forearm area and a spot or two of pitting. Lockplates retain most of their orig case colors, strong & bright in sheltered areas, fading elsewhere. Receiver retains about 50% case colors with balance faded to silver. Wood is sound with a minor nick or two and retains most of its wonderful hand-rubbed oil finish. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bores. GUN #2, the 8 bore. Fantastic mate to Gun #1 above, this is also a massive double weighing 16 lbs. 1.28 oz. It has 34” steel bbls with tapered, concave, matted rib, sgl ivory bead, doll’s head rib extension & extractor. Rib is engraved “CHARLES DALY DIAMOND QUALITY”. Mounted with extremely beautiful, streaky, honey & chocolate, French or Circassian walnut with horn-tipped, checkered, splinter forearm & Prince of Wales stock, 14” over a leather faced, solid red pad. Bottom of stock has gold initial oval engraved “A.D.L.” and it has a tiny oval hard rubber grip cap. Receiver is spectacularly engraved, obviously by the same hand that engraved Gun #1, in full coverage deep relief patterns with lockplates having full game scenes of two pointers & six ducks in a marsh scene on left side and a setter with four pheasants in a field scene on right side. Balance of receiver & all appended metal parts are full coverage, deep relief engraved in foliate & floral patterns. Engraving extends about 1” around the chamber end of bbls and doll’s head. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbls retain all of an exceptionally fine, restored finish with only a minor nick or two. Receiver, lockplates & hammers retain bright case colors in sheltered areas with balance fading to silver. Wood is sound with minor handling & storage marks and retains about all of an extremely fine, professionally restored finish. There are three scratches in wood by left hammer. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bores with some light orange peel effect in front of chambers. Accompanied by the book, Steel Canvas, Wilson, which pictures both of these shotguns on p. 247 in full color with the misnomer “AUSTRIAN MADE” instead of Prussian Made. Also accompanying is a copy of Volume Four, Issue 2, Summer 1993 of The Double Gun Journal which has a full page advertisement on p. 33 from Jaqua’s Fine Guns Inc. of Findlay, Ohio, advertising this pair of shotguns for sale. Additionally, there is an article on pp. 42-47 of America’s 1st Freedom magazine (Dec. 2004), entitled “The Mighty Four-Bores”, Ross Seyfried. Also accompanying are six Eley paper 4-bore shot shells, loaded with #4 shot and four Charles Daly #4 full length brass shot shells and eight Eley 8-bore paper shot shells, loaded with #4 & BB shot, along with four Charles Daley #8 full length brass shot shells. Cartridges are all in pristine, new condition with orig loads. 4-59094 JR686 (235,000-335,000)
