REMINGTON MODEL 1885 DOUBLE BARREL DAMASCUS HAMMER SHOTGUN. SN 16871. 12 ga. 30” ribbed bbls. Marked “E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. N. Y.” on top of the bbl rib, “PATENT. / AUG.8.1871 / APR.10.1872” on the water table. These patents were issued to A. E. Whitmore and covered the locking system. The gutta percha buttplate has the “ER & S” logo in a circle in the center of the checkering. The pistol grip has a round knob and is fully checkered. There are other numbers on the water table and bottom of the bbls. This shotgun is pictured in The Guns of Remington by Howard Madaus, p. 255. CONDITION: Very good to fine. Half of the brown remaining on the Damascus pattern of the bbls and 30% of the casehardening remaining on the action, bright around the hammers. All metal has spots of light surface rust with some scattered pitting. Wood is fine with light scratches and dents. Mechanically fine. 4-59430 FS634 (800-1,200)
