RARE DELUXE ENGRAVED MODEL 1881 MARLIN LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. SN 12764. Fine rifle with 28″ oct bbl, full magazine, German silver blade Rocky Mountain front sight and early Marlin style semi-buckhorn rear sight. The wood is beautifully grained American walnut with early style checkered forearm and “S” shaped pistol grip stock with semi-crescent steel buttplate. The receiver is very nicely engraved with the vignette of a walking stag on the left side and a reclining deer on the right side. Both vignettes are surrounded by nicely executed foliate arabesque patterns. The top of the receiver, bolt and tip of the top tang have flourishes of arabesque patterns. The stock and forearm each have two plugged holes on the bottom. CONDITION: Fine, the bbl retains about 85-88% original blue, thin in spots with moderate edge wear. The receiver retains about 50% original case colors, mostly faded and turning silver with some decent color on the right side. The lever retains traces of case colors in the sheltered areas and the hammer 75-80% faded case colors. The wood is sound with the butt stock having usual light handling & use marks and retains about 90% strong original varnish with minor touch up near the receiver. The forearm is also sound, shows moderate to heavy wear and retains 30-40% original varnish with some minor touch up near the receiver. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore. 4-53415 JR771 (5,000-8,000)
