REMINGTON SCARCE MODEL 1883 DOUBLE BARRELL DAMASCUS HAMMER SHOTGUN. SN 14669. 10 ga. 26-3/4” ribbed bbls. Marked “E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. N. Y” on top of the bbl rib. The bottom of each bbl has the number 5, apparently the grade. “PATENT. / AUG.8.1871 / APR.10.1872” on the water table. These patents were issued to A. E. Whitmore and covered the locking system. There are other numbers and initials on the water table and bottom of bbls including the number 3 indicating the grade. The gutta percha buttplate has the “ER & S” logo in a circle in the center of the checkering. This shotgun is pictured in The Guns of Remington by Howard Madaus, p. 255. CONDITION: Smooth gray/brown patina overall with traces of casehardening color on the action. Wood has dents and scratches with some oil soaking at the grip and on the forearm. Bbls have been shortened and the lead is exposed at the muzzle. Mechanically good. 4-59432 FS637 (1,500-2,500)
