RARE REMINGTON PERCUSSION SINGLE BARREL SHOTGUN. Cal. 20 bore. NSN. These rare shotguns were recently identified, around 1990, by Jay Huber, only after he had purchased an extremely rare 1877 Remington catalogue which listed this model of shotgun. Prior to then they had been identified by a variety of names and even as cheap European imports. Mr. Huber is responsible for this shotgun’s listing in Flayderman’s Guide. Very simply constructed, these shotguns have a 35” rnd bbl with sgl brass bead & deep sighting notch in hammer nose. It has two iron guides on bottom containing its orig, hickory, brass tipped ramrod. Receiver is very simple, flat sided with radiused front & rear sides, center hammer with top & bottom tangs and a simple finger rest, iron trigger guard. Mounted with uncheckered, straight grain, American walnut with a 10-1/2” rnd forearm with iron tip & straight stock with smooth iron shotgun buttplate. Accompanied by copies of an 1873 Remington pamphlet and p. 21 of Remington 1877 catalogue, both advertising this shotgun. The 1873 pamphlet states that “having made & sold 10,000 of these guns within the past few years, we now feel warranted in resuming their manufacture.”. This is, seemingly, an exaggeration in the production figures but regardless, there probably are many more out there in collections that are unidentified as they are completely unmarked. This shotgun was part of the exhibit “Arms & Art of the Remington Arms Company” at the Cody Firearms Museum, Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Cody, WY in 1997 and is pictured on p. 251 of the book The Guns of Remington, Madaus & Goodwin. CONDITION: Fine plus. Bbl retains a smooth, bright, brown finish, probably original, slightly thin over forearm area. Receiver retains traces of blue finish, being predominately a dark brown patina overall. Wood is sound with handling & use marks and retains a hand worn patina. Mechanics are fine, strong pitted bore. 4-59429 JR387 (1,000-2,000)
