*LOT OF THREE SPRINGFIELDS. 1) Springfield Model 1903. Cal. 22. SN 369088. This is a very odd 03 Springfield. It has all the outward appearances of being a standard issue 03 with a bbl date of “2-10”. Upon inspection the gun is Cal. 22 but has a full size Cal. 30 chamber. Upon detailed inspection of the gun and disassembly of the bolt, it appears that this is an experimental that the Springfield armory was testing starting in the era of 1906 reference The Springfield 1903 Rifle by Brophy, pp. 262-263. It appears that the Armory started experimenting with this particular conversion on Krags and then adapted it to go in the 03. Upon disassembly of this bolt it shows to be identical to the one shown on p. 263 of the aforementioned book. Buttstock assembly has been replaced with that of a late war to postwar 2 lug stock with a “DAL” cartouche and thus is not stamped with “22” on the tip. CONDITION: Rifle shows extensive use and a fair amount of poor storage as there is a significant amount of spotting over the entire gun with a fair amount of surface rust or patina. With the exception of the trigger housing, which has been replaced, probably with the stock, and is Parkerized, the rest of the gun is blued with a moderate amount of surface corrosion. Bore shows dirty but with promise of cleaning up significantly. Buttplate is early 03, fine checkered, with a trap. Buttstock is a 2 bolt “DAL” in very good condition, with a minimum of scratches and dings. Hand guard is high humped, grooved as the early teens should be. In spite of outside appearance I believe this is a rare and/or exotic version of the 03 Springfield that deems further research. 2) Springfield Armory 03. Cal. 30-06. SN 1270448. This rifle appears to have been a heavily modified Springfield Sporter. It has a Remington heavy bbl that has at one point in time had scope blocks mounted on it, but now has a rather large globe-type front target sight on a Unertl scope block. Rear sight is a Lyman 48 base only. Bolt is nickel steel and numbered to the gun. Buttstock is a heavily modified 03 Sporter type stock with 03 Sporter or 1922 buttplate and has had simulated ivory inserts put in both nose and grip cap. There was a sling swivel in it at one time, but it is missing. There is no front band present. CONDITION: Receiver retains 80% orig blue with polished bolt and headless cocking piece being the same. Remington heavy bbl shows better than 90% orig finish, but having had some discoloration from where scope blocks were mounted at one point. Trigger guard and floorplate assembly shows better than 90% orig blue and stock is a heavily modified Springfield Sporter stock that has an insert or repair approx. 6”x2” inlayed very neatly into left side of stock where you would rest your cheek. 3) Springfield 1903 Mark 1. Cal. 30-06. SN 1195399. This example of a Mark 1 retains most of its orig parts being it has the Mark 1 magazine cutoff and trigger assembly. Bolt assembly is stamped “NS” for nickel steel but is not of the swept back variety. Rear sight assembly is that of an 03A1 as it has flush knobs instead of dished. CONDITION: Bbl and receiver assembly are refinished with a moderate amount of pin prick pitting underneath the blue. Middle band retains about 75% Parkerizing, again with some corrosion. Front bbl band is a dull blue but is in good shape. Trigger guard assembly itself is rusted and moderately pitted, but floorplate retains 90% green Parkerizing. Bolt assembly, though nickel steel, has been parkerized with the extractor being blue. Buttstock is proper for a Mark 1 with ejection port notched out and a “WTS” cartouche. Moderate dings throughout with most prominent being on the right hand side between stock bolts. Hand guard is of later type with a slightly lower hump, which could be correct for this gun, and shows moderate dings with nothing really significant. 4-58233 (1,800-2,500)
