RARE EARLY COLT MODEL 1861 NAVY CONVERSION REVOLVER. Cal. 38 RF. SN 3. Number 3 of the 3,300 original manufactured Richards-Mason 61 Navy conversions. It has 7-1/2″ rnd bbl, German silver front sight, 1-line bbl address “-Address Col. Saml Colt New-York U.S. America-“. The ejector rod head is flat with impressed concentric circles. The wedge is percussion type with spring. The frame has a loading gate with internal spring and bears assembly #368, which number also appears on the cylinder pin. The conversion plate and trigger guard were not removed to check assembly numbers. All of the serial numbers on the frame, trigger guard and back strap are accompanied by a small “1”. The cylinder is 6-shot, unfluted with Ormsby naval battle scene and the hammer has the offset firing pin secured with two rivets. It has a brass trigger guard and back strap with “36 Cal” on the left side of the trigger guard and it has 1-piece walnut grips. CONDITION: Fine, all matching, except the wedge which is unnumbered. The bbl retains 25-30% flaked original blue in the sheltered areas with minor rust pitting at the muzzle being mostly a light gray patina. The ejector rod housing retains about 50% original blue in the sheltered areas. There is some light battering around the wedge opening on the bbl. The cylinder retains traces of original blue, being mostly a gray metal patina and retaining about 75% Ormsby naval battle scene. The frame retains about 50% thin original case colors, mixed with light patina. The trigger guard retains traces of original silver plating with the balance a light yellow brass color. The grips have a chipped right heel and show heavy edge wear with nicks and dings on the right side, lighter on the left side with some battering on the butt and retains about 80% original varnish. Mechanics are crisp, strong bore with light to moderate pitting. The wedge screw is battered and the frame screws are lightly battered with the trigger guard screw and butt screw replacements.
