*SPRINGFIELD ARMORY MODEL 1903 RIFLE. Cal. 30-06. SN 45547. 24” bbl dated “05” with an “A” underneath. With a Bassel & Blenkner rear sight assembly. This rear sight was submitted to government for testing in 1908 as the government was looking for a better sight for their sharp shooters & marksmen. The above sight was designed & patented under Patent #870337 for testing. Rifle is a very fine example of an updated or altered rod bayonet rifle. CONDITION: Receiver retains some 95% orig finish with three punch marks directly below serial number. Bolt assembly retains 90-95% of a blue refinish. Magazine cut-off is of early nitride blue & retains almost all of finish. Rear sight collar retains 80% of finish with some very light scattered pitting on right side. Rear sight assembly retains 95% of its orig finish with initials “BB” stamped in base. Bbl assembly retains 95% of an arsenal added blue as does front bbl band. Middle band appears to be in as new condition with orig finish. Buttstock assembly is in magnificent condition having been lightly cleaned & refinished at some point. Finger grooves are very sharp & crisp as is the “WES” cartouche on this proper 1905 era stock, without relief at receiver ring. Hand guard is of pre-war flat top variety with no sight groove & is in excellent plus condition retaining all of its finish with no dents or marring present. Buttplate assembly is smooth with about 75% finish turning plum & rifle is equipped with a very nice early Wolf manufactured sling. 4-57805 BK68 (6,000-8,000)
