MARLIN BALLARD PACIFIC SINGLE SHOT RIFLE. SN 14185. Cal. 40-90 Everlasting 2-15/16″. Scarce Ballard rifle with 30″ oct bbl, 1″ across the flats at the muzzle. It has a rare ivory insert, iron, Rocky Mtn. front sight, Marlin semi-buckhorn rear sight & a mid-range tang sight with 3″ staff. Receiver has dbl set triggers & a ring lever. Bottom flat of bbl has the very distinctive feature of two iron guides containing a replacement brass tipped wiping rod. Mounted with nicely figured, slab-sawed, uncheckered American walnut with semi-schnable forearm secured with a single screw through small iron escutcheons & a straight stock with crescent buttplate. PROVENANCE: Leland Clapp Collection. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl retains 70-75% strong orig blue with scattered pitting & a large area of pitting on left side of bbl and across bottom flats. Receiver is a mottled silver/gray patina with traces of silvered case colors. Stock has the obligatory cracks in wrist with a gouge & crack in left side of bbl channel of forearm and missing a small sliver from left tip of forearm, otherwise wood is sound with forearm a hand worn patina and buttstock retains about 90% orig varnish. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore. 4-36043 JR39 (3,500-5,000)
