The developmental work had been done by the then Head of Research and Development, the late Tom Robinson. Each of the actions with bbls fitted in .30-06 caliber were given to five different persons by the Vice President/Sales Snow W. Smart with instructions to “work them up into a finished rifle as you think they should be made”. One of these was given to Mr. L.R. Wallack, then with Marlin’s advertising agency. It is marked “MARLIN 707 X-1”. Mr. Wallack collaborated with gunsmith Al Biesen on the final design and all the work was performed by Mr. Biesen. About a year after completion it was decided to shelve the bolt action rifle development project indefinitely. This rifle was then given to Mr. Wallack by Mr. Smart. Signed “William S. Brophy, Sr. Technical Manager.” This letter serves to confirm the order and assembly of 5 prototype rifles. The item being sold here is Snow Smart’s rifle from this group of five.
