JOHANN FREDERICK HULK II (Netherlands, 1855-1913) THE BUSY SQUARE. Oil on mahogany panel shows a village square with brick and stone buildings having storefronts. Sixteen people dot the square, some in conversation, others talking to merchants. A steeple centers the sky which is blue with white and gray clouds. The sun shines from the right side casting shadows. Signed lower right. Also a period three-line inscription on reverse, presumably the location and also signed. Housed in a gilt gesso decorated frame. SIZE: 12-1/2″ x 16″. CONDITION: Inpainting, very good. 9-99247 (2,500-3,500)
