*EXTREMELY RARE, ONE OF TWO KNOWN, MARLIN MODEL 40 PUMP ACTION RIFLE.

*EXTREMELY RARE, ONE OF TWO KNOWN, MARLIN MODEL 40 PUMP ACTION RIFLE. SN 17976. Cal. 25-20. Produced under the Marlin-Rockwell Corporation which assumed control of the Marlin Firearms Company in about 1915 and almost immediately began machine gun production for the war effort. Under the Marlin-Rockwell Corp. they also manufactured a variety of products including ball bearings, ammunition, bombs and other implements required by the U.S. military. By 1922 the Marlin-Rockwell Corp. had divested itself of most of their holdings including Marlin Firearms which became known as The Marlin Firearms Corporation. During the short tenure at Marlin, the Marlin-Rockwell Corp. produced very few sporting firearms including the Model 40, which is simply the former Model 27S with the Marlin-Rockwell bbl address and the model number changed on top tang. Under the new Marlin Firearms Corp. production of the Model 27S was resumed and no other Models 40 are known to have been produced. According to Mr. Rohal’s notes there are only two Models 40 rifles known. Rifle has usual Model 27S configuration with 24″ tapered oct bbl, silver bead front sight and semi-buckhorn rear sight. Bbl marking, forward of the rear sight, “Marlin-Rockwell Corp. New Haven, Ct, U.S.A.” with patent dates below and an unusual long arrow at each end with two small circles on the shaft. It has caliber marking with arrows at each end over chamber area and “Special Smokeless Steel” on the top left flat. Top tang is marked “Marlin/Mod. 40”. Mounted with uncheckered straight grain American walnut with rnd ribbed forearm and straight stock with crescent steel buttplate. SN is on left side of top tang under the wood, inside top tang channel of butt stock and inside the buttplate. Buttplate also has a previous SN of “16765” which has stamped over with a series of “1”s. PROVENANCE: Richard Rohal Estate Collection. CONDITION: Very fine to extremely fine, all matching. Overall retains 95-97% strong orig factory blue with only sharp edge wear and a few minor light handling & use nicks & scratches. Buttplate retains about 90% orig blue mixed with brown patina. Wood is sound with light, fine handling & storage nicks & scratches and retains most of its orig factory finish. Mechanics are crisp, strong bright bore. 4-40432 JR292 (2,500-4,000)
