EXTREMELY RARE M1901 (SECOND TYPE) SPRINGFIELD ARMORY UNFINISHED RECEIVER. This second type, solid top receiver was originally intended to be on the experimental M1901 rifle – the transitional rifle between the Krag and what eventually became the M1903Springfield. Please see Brophy, pages 2 to 20 for more information. The receiver does not have a serial number or any Springfield Armory or model designation numbers or letters on it. The metal is “in the white” with no bluing what-so-ever. In fact, when compared to the receiver of the M1901 rifle we have in this auction, you can see the sharper corners on this receiver that indicate it never finished the machining process. Only a handful of these rifles were ever produced for the trials looking to replace the Krag rifle. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Shows some areas of rough unfinished metal and some light rust and grease, but certainly falls into the realm of “unfired”. 4-58539 (100-200)
