SCARCE COLLINS HIGH GRADE BOWIE KNIFE. Scarce and unusual Bowie with 10-3/16″ clip point blade, 1-9/16″ wide at the ricasso and 5/16″ thick on the top at the ricasso. The blade has etched panels on both sides of foliate arabesque patterns and the left side of the ricasso is hand engraved “Collins & Co. / Hartford”. The handle is heavy cast brass with deep relief oak leaf & acorn decorations and a dbl “S” shaped hand guard. The pommel is a jaguar head. Accompanied by its original leather sheath with light decorations on the outside, a brass throat and two narrow belt loops on the back side. CONDITION: Extremely fine, the blade retains most of its original bright factory polish with two or three small spots of light surface rust near the back on the left side and a larger spot on the left ricasso. The right side has a larger spot of pitting in the decorative panel and smaller spots elsewhere. The brass handle is extremely fine showing light wear and retaining a lovely dark patina. The blade is extremely sharp. The sheath is dry and flexed with crackled surface and loss of some finish. A scarce set, apparently made for the South American trade.
