VERY RARE SHARPS CUSTOM BARRELED EXTRA HEAVY TARGET RIFLE. SN 156857. Cal. Appears to be 40-70 or 40-90 Sharps straight. This extraordinary rifle has a 34-1/4″ extremely heavy oct bbl, 1-3/4″ across the flats at the muzzle & weighs 25 lbs. 4.8 oz. It has a front sight dovetail containing a windgage spirit level globe front sight, no provision for a rear bbl sight and tang is mounted with a factory installed mid-range vernier sight with 4″ staff and the base numbered to the rifle. “Remington” is found under the forearm but is otherwise unmarked. Mounted with an uncheckered custom walnut forearm and orig checkered pistol grip buttstock with checkered grip cap with and has a nickel-plated brass 2-pc buttplate. It has dbl set triggers. Accompanied by a Sharps Rifle Co. letter from Dr. R.L. Moore which identifies this rifle as having been invoiced to Ben Kittridge & Co. of Cincinnati, OH on March 2, 1877 and shipped to James Dodds of Dayton, OH. Similar guns shipped to him are pictured in the Sharps book by Fran Sellers. It is listed as a Model 1874 mid-range target rifle No. 1 with a weight of 8 lbs. 13 oz. Dr. Moore also states that James Dodds was a Dayton, Ohio gunsmith who had previously had shipped to him some of the heaviest Sharps rifles that were manufactured, one of which weighed 25 lbs. Dr. Moore speculates that Dodds rebarreled this rifle to create something similar to other heavy barreled Sharps. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Bbl retains an even, smooth, dark brown patina with bright metal under the forearm and was probably left “in the white” and now has this wonderful age patina. Receiver retains most of its orig faded case colors, stronger in sheltered areas, especially on left side. Lockplate & hammer retain about 60% faded case colors, strong in sheltered areas. Forearm is a smooth, dark hand worn patina. Buttstock with its unusual buttplate has a notch in the comb from the rear sight and retains about 75% orig varnish with a few spots of dark wear.
